Canto Connect Mac OS


Canto Connect is an application for macOS that allows users to access Canto directly on their desktop.


With the application, you are able to:

  • import extensive folder structures (Canto preserves the imported structure so you don’t have to recreate it
  • import files with embedded additional metadata (copyright information, geo-location data, keywords and more)
  • upload brand element like images, videos, documents and presentations
  • synchronize files from My Collections with your computer for offline access


Note: Please make sure your Mac is updated to either BigSur or Monterey. Canto Connect is no longer compatible with Catalina.


Installation

  • How to install the Canto Connect app for BigSur, Monterey or Ventura

    1. You can follow this link to the Canto Connect app in your Mac App Store or open the App Store and search for Canto.
    2. Click Get.
  • How to install the Canto Connect app for older macOS versions

    1. Download Canto Connect (latest version: 2.22 from February 28, 2022) here.
    2. On your Mac navigate to System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
    3. Select open anyway.
    4. Move the app into your Applications folder and open it there.
    5. If the above didn't work for you, try to open it by right-clicking Canto and then select Open.

How to use Canto Connect 

  1. Open the Canto Connect app.
  2. Enter your Canto-URL and click on Next.
    Note: SSO login is supported.
  3. Enter your Email address and Password. 
  4. Proceed by clicking Login.
  5. The home screen gets displayed.
    Note: The displayed options vary depending on your user role.
  6. Click either
    • Advanced Uploader to upload folders and files to your Canto library, or
    • My Collections to get an overview of the synchronized files and open the Canto Sync folder.

How to use Duplicate Check in Canto Connect

As an administrator, you can choose to have Canto Connect check during the upload whether the new assets are duplicates of assets which are already in your library.
Note: This does not affect the settings in your main Canto library).


To set up duplicate checking in Canto Connect:

  1. Open the Canto Connect app. In the upper right-hand corner of your home screen you will find the settings icon ().
  2. Go to the Settings tab.
  3. Enable Duplicate Check by clicking on the slider.
  4. You will see the Duplicate Check settings appear at the bottom. Select the settings that best suit your needs. For a review of how the Duplicate Check settings work in Canto, refer to the following link.

You can upload content to an Upload Link via the Canto Connect app.


Note: The folder structure is not maintained when uploading your folder(s) using an Upload Link via the Canto Connect app.


Instead of inserting the URL for the main library, all you need to do is enter the upload link.

  1. Open the Canto Connect app.
  2. Insert the Upload Link into the field.
  3. Click on Next.

The Canto Connect home screen is displayed. Continue as described above.


How to use Canto Connect for Workspaces

You can also use the Canto Connect app for workspaces to conveniently upload files or entire folders.

  1. Open the Canto Connect app.
  2. Enter the URL of the workspace. 
  3. Click Next.
  4. Enter your email address and password
  5. Click Login.

The Canto Connect home screen is displayed. Continue as described above.


How to use Canto Connect for My Collections

If you want to have your Collections (or individual albums from your collections) saved to your Mac, you can set up a sync using Canto Connect.

  1. Once you are logged in to Canto Connect on your Mac, please select the settings icon ().
  2. Head over to the Settings tab.
  3. Next to Canto Sync Folder, select Change and choose the folder on your Mac where you would like to save the assets.
  4. Head to the Status tab.
  5. Ensure My Collections sync is set to On, showing orange on the bottom right of the screen.
  6. Open your web browser and log in to your Canto account. By default, the sync for My Collections is deactivated.
  7. Click on the desired collection and activate the sync to your Mac. You can find the same option in the list view under actions. When the symbol is green the collection is synched ().

    Once this has been set up, your My Collections will sync to your Mac folder within 24 hours.


Note: The sync works in one direction only! Assets will only be downloaded onto your Mac, they will not be synced back to Canto after you have edited them locally on your Mac.

How to use the Canto Connect Advanced Uploader

The Advanced Uploader feature allows you to upload folders, including subfolders and files, to your Canto library.

  • Upload folders

    1. Click Select Folders From Your Local Drive to upload a folder including subfolders (a folder structure).
      A corresponding selection dialog is displayed.
    2. Select the folder you want to upload.
    3. In the following dialog you can ...
      • select another folder you want to upload (Add another folder),  
      • change the destination folder in your Canto library (Upload to),
      • start the Upload.
    4. Click on Upload.
    5. If the Add metadata on upload option is enabled in Canto Preferences, another dialog appears.
      Select the metadata to be added to all uploaded files, and click Apply.

      The selected folder is uploaded to the Canto library, and its subfolders are reproduced as a folder/album structure at the selected location in the library.


  • Upload files

    1. Click Select Files... to upload multiple individual files.
      A corresponding selection dialog is displayed
    2. Select the files you want to upload.
      You can select files from different folders.
    3. In the following dialog you can ...
      • select other files you want to upload (Add other files),
      • change the destination album in your Canto library (Upload to),
      • start the Upload.
    4. Click Upload.
    5. If the Add metadata on upload option is enabled in Canto Preferences, another dialog appears.
      Select the metadata to be added to all uploaded files and click Apply.

      The files are uploaded to the selected Canto Library album.

Note: There is a timeout when uploading files after 36 hours.
